Review of 2008/09

The ladies have had a mixed season. Training started in September and throughout the season numbers have been more consistent than in the last few years, averaging 8-10 at most sessions. We welcomed some new players, Bex, Franky (who unfortunately moved away again at Christmas), Carly and Marketa plus Phil who joined us from the Junior Girls and who all played regularly throughout the season. We also welcomed Jon as our new coach.

The ladies entered the Wessex League again this year, with a new league format from previous seasons.

Between the start of the season and Christmas, all 14 teams were in the same division and played each other once, Chiltern produced some good performances and won 10 games whilst only losing three and this saw us finish in equal second place.

At Christmas, the league was divided into two divisions, based on the league position from the first half of the season, Chiltern being allocated a place in Div One; two of the teams who had beaten us being placed in the second Division. Our performances from the first half of the season no longer counted and we started again with 6 teams to play again, both home and away, during the second half of the season. We started badly and lost three in row before making a mini recovery, winning the next three. Two more losses followed and we found ourselves struggling near the bottom of the division. However, fortunes changed again for the run and by winning three out of four of the remaining matches and other teams also having mixed results, our position recovered and we finished third in the League.

In the Cup Competition we received a bye based on last years appearance in the final, and therefore didn’t have to play until the quarter finals. Due to a late match day change and lack of available players, we fielded a below strength team and lost convincingly to a strong Diamonds team.

Thank you to everyone who played this season, to Jon for coaching us, our referees, table officials and supporters. We look forward to everyone returning at the start of next season.
